What DogEar sends to our server

When you click the DogEar button on a YouTube video, the extension sends:

• The video's transcript and title. Needed to write the notes.
• A random installation ID. A UUID created when you install the extension. It is not derived from anything about you and is not linked to a name, email, or Google account. It exists only to count how many videos this installation has used.
• Your licence key, if you have one. Only sent if you've bought a subscription and entered it.

What happens to the transcript

Our server forwards it to Anthropic, which runs the AI model that writes the notes. We do not store the transcript, and we do not store the notes that come back. They pass through and are gone.

Anthropic's handling of that data is governed by their privacy policy. Under their commercial terms, data sent through the API is not used to train their models.

What we store, and for how long

• A count against your installation ID. Just a number — how many videos you've generated notes for. Because the free allowance is a lifetime one rather than a monthly reset, this number is kept for as long as the allowance needs enforcing. It is a count and nothing else; it is not a history.
• A count against a salted one-way hash of your IP address. Used to stop automated abuse. We never store the address itself. The salt is random, changes every day, and is discarded with that day's counts after two days — so once those two days pass, the hashes cannot be traced back to an address by anyone, ourselves included.
• A cached licence-validity result if you're a subscriber, for up to one hour, so we don't re-check your subscription on every single video.

We do not store transcripts, notes, video titles, video URLs, or viewing history.

What stays on your own computer

Your installation ID and licence key are kept in your browser's local extension storage. They never leave your machine except as described above. Uninstalling DogEar removes them.

What DogEar does not do

• No accounts, no passwords, no email addresses collected by us.
• No analytics, no advertising, no third-party trackers.
• No record of which videos you watch or which you generate notes for.
• No selling or sharing of data. There is nothing meaningful to sell.

Payments

Payments are handled entirely by Lemon Squeezy, who act as the merchant of record. They collect your billing details; we never see your card. We only ever receive a licence key and whether it is currently valid.

Permissions the extension asks for

• Access to youtube.com — to place the DogEar button on the page and read the transcript.
• Storage — to keep your installation ID and licence key locally.
• Access to our own API — to send transcripts for note generation.

DogEar does not request access to any other website.

Children

DogEar is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

If this policy changes materially, the date at the top will change and the updated version will be published here before the change takes effect.
